Organization Background
Rare is a fast-growing, international conservation organization that runs state-of-the-art communications and outreach projects in more than 40 countries around the world. Named to Fast Company magazine’s list of “Top Social Capitalists” for the last four years in a row, Rare is committed to bringing a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity to solving one of this century’s great challenges – changing human behavior to make conservation possible.
All Rare projects are managed by local partners; our focus is not only on building community support for conservation, but also on improving collaboration capacity among the world’s leading local environmental organizations. Rare has trained 150 local conservation leaders implementing dynamic change processes in 40 countries. These “campaign managers” work for the largest and the smallest conservation organizations globally, including The Nature Conservancy, WWF, and Conservation International.
The Opportunity
The Director, Pride Latin America is responsible for Rare’s programmatic, operational, and financial outputs in the Spanish-speaking world. This position is based in Rare’s regional headquarters in Guadalajara, Mexico and will manage and expand Rare’s training and learning exchanges among a growing portfolio of local conservationists working in critically important natural sites in the Spanish-speaking world.
The Director, Pride Latin America will play a critical role in meeting each of Rare’s four main priorities:
1. Expand Rare’s conservation impact in the Spanish-speaking world.
2. Enhance and continuously improve Rare’s strategies and tools
3. Unlock burgeoning potential of an alumni network
4. Leverage new sources of funding
Areas of Responsibility
Financial/Operational Management
- Management of all Guadalajara staff and oversight of University trainers, support staff and Guadalajara-trained alumni network
- Full fiscal responsibility for the Latin America office budget
- Reporting to Rare headquarters regarding fundraising, programmatic progress, fiscal and staff issues
Fundraising
- Responsible for donor relations and managing funding pipeline for the Spanish-speaking world; the goal is total cost recovery through a diverse funding stream
- Write and review proposals in an effort to secure additional funding for campaigns in the region
- Participate in all donor trips to the relevant regions
- Ensure all fundraising activity is well-coordinated with development staff at the headquarters office
Relationship Management
- Create and oversee the implementation of a Guadalajara-based regional communications strategy for the organization
- Manage relationships with local and regional conservation partners, relevant government partners, and local, regional and international donors
- Cultivate and build strong relationships with individuals, institutions and governments both in the relevant regions and in the United States
- Identify new opportunities for partnerships, funding and regional programs
Conservation Outcome
- Fully manage and monitor at least 3 Pride campaigns at any given time
- Select and train a minimum of 10 local conservation leaders each year, utilizing Rare’s university course in conservation education at the University of Guadalajara in Autlan.
- Manage application process including pipeline of applicants, utilizing a process and information technology system developed by colleagues in Arlington office
- Ensure meaningful conservation objectives for each campaign and successful campaign implementation progress, on time and on budget
- Assist local campaign managers when developing long-term follow-up strategies and financing efforts to turn initial momentum into lasting conservation results
- Ensure programmatic alliance and impact locally
- Conduct regular site visits to maintain campaign quality
Qualifications, Skills & Knowledge Requirements
- Masters Degree preferred in natural resources, conservation practice, environmental science, or a similar field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing in high transactional business in developing countries, preferably in conservation
- Demonstrated ability to raise multi-year funding from foundations, individuals and government
- Prior management experience of staff in a multi-cultural setting
- Successfully managed complex projects and teams of project managers
- Strong public speaking skills, as well as strong written and oral communication skills
- Willingness to travel internationally based on needs of the position
- Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English
